Volvo has unveiled a significant update for its compact XC40 SUV for the 2028 model year. While not a complete redesign, this revision affects the vehicle’s exterior styling, interior, and technological architecture.
Up front, the XC40 receives a new LED lighting signature, still inspired by Thor’s Hammer, a design element found throughout the Swedish brand’s lineup. The grille, bumper, hood, and fenders have also been redesigned. At the rear, new taillights frame a revised liftgate and bumper.
The most significant change is found inside: an all-new 11.2-inch central display, larger than the one it replaces, provides access to Volvo’s latest interface. The number of steps required to access common functions has reportedly been reduced. The infotainment system now integrates Gemini, Google’s artificial intelligence assistant, allowing drivers to plan a route or manage their messages using natural-language voice commands. The wireless charger has also been redesigned.
Volvo and Safety
The 2028 XC40 benefits from a completely revised safety architecture: new front and side radars, a new front-facing camera, rear radars, and twelve ultrasonic sensors. These components support automatic emergency braking and steering avoidance, as well as a new door-opening alert designed to warn of approaching cyclists. The optional Pilot Assist system can now assist with lane changes, while the optional 360-degree camera gains a three-dimensional view to make tight maneuvers easier.
Volvo has not yet confirmed which configurations will be offered in the Canadian market. At ALBI Volvo, we are naturally looking forward to the arrival of this refreshed XC40 and will be happy to answer your questions as soon as the Canadian details become available.
