The automotive world loves technological advances. Volvo, a leading specialist in road safety, has just made a surprising decision: to abandon lidar technology, which assists in the driving of semi-autonomous vehicles. This mainly affects the EX90 and ES90 2026 electric models, which can be found in the ALBI Volvo showroom.
The decision is simple. Volvo is ending its collaboration with Luminar, the company that developed the lidar integrated into the top of the windshield. It is said that the supplier did not fulfill its commitments to the Swedish manufacturer, causing Volvo to have concerns about the manufacturing and assembly chain.
It must be said that the decision is not that surprising, since the lidar had gone from being “standard” to a simple option.
Does this affect safety?
The answer may surprise you, because no, not really, it has no real impact. Volvo maintains that its vehicles will retain a very high level of protection thanks to a more traditional set of sensors, including high-definition cameras, radar, and ultrasound. A more powerful on-board computer has also been added, boosting the already impressive computing power.
In short: there will no longer be the small “bump” on the roof that was seen on some electric vehicles, but safety remains a priority.
For Quebec buyers, this means a few changes. First, the price could become a little more affordable. Lidar is one of the most expensive components in a modern vehicle. Its removal also simplifies maintenance, since it avoids technology that is sensitive to shocks, salt, and winter storms here.
Second, the message is clear: Volvo is focusing on reliability and consistency rather than a race for futuristic gadgets.
Don't worry. Abandoning lidar is not a step backward, but a shift toward more stable and better-controlled solutions. At ALBI Volvo, we focus on one thing above all else: simplicity for the customer, without sacrificing safety. For Volvo, this is a guarantee of safety and comfort. And we love that!
